Place an Order →How to Choose a Mushroom to Work With
Choosing the right variety is not simply a matter of potency, it is a matter of fit. The mushroom you work with should be matched to your intention, your level of experience, and the quality of presence you are ready to meet. Entheogyn facilitators work with clients directly to make this selection thoughtfully. The guidance below is offered as a starting point for that conversation.
It is worth acknowledging that for many people, choosing a medicine before they have ever worked with one can feel genuinely difficult. How do you select something you haven't yet met? The descriptions on this page and in the strain profiles draw from reported experiences, but they cannot fully capture what a direct encounter with the mushroom actually feels like. If you are new to this work, it is completely natural not to know where to begin. That uncertainty is part of the process, and it is exactly what the preparation sessions with your facilitator are for. You do not need to arrive with the answer.
First Journey
New to the medicine
If you have never worked with psilocybin, or have limited experience, the priority is a variety that is warm, welcoming, and unlikely to overwhelm. The goal of a first session is not to go as deep as possible. It is to begin a relationship with the medicine and with yourself.

Costa Rica
Deeply grounding and heart-centered. Well-suited to relational healing and somatic processing.
Shiva Lingham
For experienced individuals ready for profound cathartic and identity work.
Clarity & Integration
Seeking insight, clarity, or perspective
Some people enter their session with a specific question, about their life, their relationships, their path. These varieties tend toward clarity of perception, bright and lucid inner experience, and a quality of insight that translates well into integration work.
Hillbilly
Reliable and warm. An excellent companion for integration sessions.
Albino Golden Teacher
Luminous and insightful. Clarifying quality, shows you what you need without overwhelming.

Makilla Gorilla
Among the most powerful varieties we cultivate. For the most experienced and well-prepared.
Shiva Lingham
Profound introspection, ego dissolution, and cathartic processing. Experienced individuals only.
Haole
Gold medal potency, ~21 mg/g. Among the most alkaloid-dense cubensis cultivars documented. Experienced individuals only.
A Note on Selection
No guide replaces a real conversation. Strain selection at Entheogyn is always made collaboratively between the client and their facilitator during preparation sessions, taking into account personal history, intention, current life context, and any clinical considerations. The mushroom often has something to say about this too.
On Expectations
The experiences described here reflect what has been reported by others, they are not a promise of what you will encounter. The mushroom meets each person where they are, and no two journeys are ever the same. What arises will be shaped by your history, your nervous system, your preparation, your set and setting, and factors beyond any of our knowing. Letting go of expectations is not just good advice, it is essential. There are no guaranteed experiences with any particular variety. The medicine will offer what it offers. Your work is to meet it with openness.

Medicine You Can Trust.
At Entheogyn, our mission is to provide professionally cultivated, high-quality natural medicine to licensed healing centers and facilitators who are committed to safe, ethical, and intentional psychedelic care.
Our lead cultivator, Shane Schoolman founder and CEO of MycoLove Farm brings decades of hands-on cultivation experience and a longstanding passion for mycology and natural medicine. His approach combines technical expertise, consistency, and respect for the therapeutic potential of these medicines.
We believe that understanding the medicine itself is an important part of responsible facilitation. A facilitator's familiarity with cultivation practices, strain selection, potency variability, and the broader relationship to natural medicine can meaningfully influence participant preparation, trust, and integration.
Entheogyn is dedicated not only to producing clean, reliable medicine, but also to supporting education and transparency within the emerging natural medicine space. We value open dialogue with facilitators and healing centers and aim to foster informed, grounded relationships with the medicines being served.
We are glad to answer questions about our process, cultivation standards, and the genetics we work with. Understanding how the medicine is grown, and the care and intention behind it, is part of what makes for grounded, well-informed practice.
Our hope is that facilitators feel confident in the quality of the medicine they provide, with a clear understanding of how thoughtful cultivation supports meaningful therapeutic work.

Shane Schoolman
Shane Schoolman is a mycologist, scientist, and entrepreneur whose relationship with fungi goes far beyond the laboratory. As co-founder of Mycolove a functional mushroom wellness company he has spent years deepening his understanding of how mushrooms grow, what they need, and what they carry.
At Entheogyn, Shane leads all cultivation, research, and production of psilocybin cubensis. He oversees every stage of the process from spore selection and genetics to harvest and extraction with a standard of integrity that goes beyond regulatory compliance.
For Shane, growing this medicine is a sacred responsibility. The grow room is a tended space one where the energy, intention, and care brought by the people working within it are understood to influence the medicine itself. Stress, carelessness, and negativity are not permitted near the plants. The fungi grow in the presence of music, cultivated by people who understand that what they are growing is not a product it is a teacher.
His work bridges rigorous science and deep reverence. The result is a clean, fully traceable, high-integrity supply of medicine grown from a place of love, studied with precision, and offered with humility.

Hillbilly
ModerateModerate-High · Warm · Grounding
Origin
Hillbilly is a wild Psilocybe cubensis landrace collected from Arkansas in the late 1990s by an online mycologist known only as 'Hillbilly,' who shared it through the Mycotopia forums. Unlike hybrid or selectively engineered cultivars, Hillbilly developed through generations of natural selection in the fields and forests of the rural South, earthy, stable, and unhurried. The strain gained renewed attention around 2018 through the isolation work of ShegrowsFungi, whose careful breeding amplified its therapeutic reputation. It has since won recognition at the Hyphae Cup in the microdosing category, a testament to its balanced and reliable alkaloid profile, averaging 0.9% psilocybin by dry weight.
Characteristics Often Encountered
- Warm, gentle onset, above-average potency with low anxiety
- Distinctive orange-centered cap; smaller than typical cubensis fruiting bodies
- Heart-opening and emotionally nourishing, often described as deeply held
- Moderate to strong visuals, soft, organic, and natural
- Strong sense of gratitude, connection, and grounded ease
- Reliable and stable across doses, well-suited to first journeys
- Excellent for preparation-focused and integration sessions

Makilla Gorilla
StrongestVery High Potency · Warm · Transformational
Origin
Makilla Gorilla was bred by crossing DC Melmak, an especially large, extra-powerful mutation of the Melmac strain developed by a breeder known as DC, with Albino Penis Envy, producing what is considered the first Psilocybe cubensis cultivar with 100% Penis Envy ancestry. Its name is a nod to Magilla Gorilla, the beloved 1960s Hanna-Barbera cartoon, though there is nothing lighthearted about its potency. The specific genetics we carry are King Makilla, a large-fruit isolation developed by the lead mycologist at Colorado Cultures LLC (Lakewood, CO) and selected from a single fruit weighing 195 grams. King Makilla consistently produces dense canopies of massive, thick-stemmed fruiting bodies, an expression of the extraordinary vitality baked into this lineage.
Characteristics Often Encountered
- Warm, surprisingly smooth onset for its potency level, minimal nausea
- Very high potency, well above Golden Teacher, approaching the top of the PE lineage
- Deep ego softening and identity exploration
- Rich visual phenomena, broad, sometimes wavy perceptual field
- Strong somatic resonance and embodied depth
- Long duration requiring attentive facilitation
- Reserved for experienced individuals in well-prepared therapeutic containers

Costa Rica
ModerateGentle · Grounding · Spiritual
Origin
The Costa Rica strain was originally collected by a trusted community mycologist while exploring the base of Arenal Volcano, one of Costa Rica's most active live volcanoes, where it thrived in the warm, humid, nutrient-dense volcanic soil. The strain was successfully domesticated in 2019 and quickly gained recognition for its distinctive UFO-shaped caps and its remarkable resilience across varying grow conditions, a reflection of the elemental wildness of its origin. Growers and practitioners alike have noted that some of the deepest genetics arise not from the laboratory but from the curiosity to go looking.
Characteristics Often Encountered
- Gentle, warm onset with a soft, unhurried unfolding
- Deep sense of connection to nature and the living world
- Spiritually warm, elemental and grounding without being heavy
- Mild to moderate visuals, earthy, organic, and nature-connected

Shiva Lingham
StrongestHigh Potency · Deep · Introspective
Origin
PE6 (Penis Envy 6) is a stabilized variant of the original Shiva Lingham strain, developed to address the challenging fruiting characteristics of its parent while preserving alkaloid density and experiential depth. The name Shiva Lingham we carry forward from our dear brother Travis Fluck, who shared that the mushroom itself communicated to him that it no longer wished to be called Penis Envy, and that Shiva Lingham was its true name. We honor that.
"Please don't call me Penis Envy. My name is Shiva Lingham."
The medicine, to our friend and grower Travis Fluck
Characteristics Often Encountered
- Profound introspective depth
- Strong ego softening and identity exploration
- Deep emotional and somatic release
- Somewhat more accessible onset than the original Shiva Lingham lineage
- Rich visual phenomena with a navigational, purposeful quality

Albino Golden Teacher
StrongModerate-High · Ethereal · Introspective
Origin
Albino Golden Teacher's precise origin is unknown, though it is believed to trace back to the Gulf region of the USA. It emerged from cultivators experimenting with leucistic and albino mutations of Golden Teacher, isolating for pale coloration and the distinctive experiential quality that came with it. It is worth noting the distinction: Albino Golden Teacher is leucistic, it retains dark, viable spores, not a true albino like True Albino Teacher (TAT). Some in the community theorize it may be a hybrid between Golden Teacher and Albino Penis Envy, which could account for its elevated potency and the slightly sharper, more electric quality of its visuals relative to standard GT.
Characteristics Often Encountered
- Clear, luminous onset, bright, ethereal, and less foggy than standard GT
- Gentle wisdom quality, introspective without overwhelming
- Moderate to strong visuals, crisp, angelic, and clarifying
- Strong sense of inner knowing and spiritual clarity
- Heart-opening with a grounded yet luminous quality
- Higher potency than standard Golden Teacher
- Well-suited to those with some prior experience seeking clarity and perspective

Albino Burma
StrongHigh Potency · Energetic · Visionary
Origin
The Burma strain originates from Southeastern Asia, specifically the northern central regions of Myanmar (Burma), where subtropical heat and fertile cattle pasturelands created ideal conditions for wild Psilocybe cubensis. The original spore print was collected by a student in Rangoon (Yangon) and made available to collectors and researchers in 2016 by a local community member. The Leucistic Burma lineage, a near-albino expression with soft lavender undertones, was later found by a close friend of Bas and released exclusively through Basidium Equilibrium in 2019. Albino Burma represents a further step: a true albino isolation that emerged from that leucistic stock, independently arrived at by three separate researchers. Unlike leucistic strains which only wash out pigmentation, Albino Burma fully eliminates it, producing porcelain-white fruiting bodies with clear, non-pigmented spores. As with most true albino expressions, it was stabilized through selective lab cultivation, as the albino trait is recessive and rarely survives in the wild.
Characteristics Often Encountered
- Clean, porcelain-white fruiting bodies, true albino, not leucistic
- Energetic, luminous onset, activating and uplifting
- Strong visual phenomena, bright, expansive, and otherworldly
- Thick, compact fruiting bodies with distinct morphology
- Strong introspective depth beneath an energetic, visionary surface
- Well-suited to movement-based or creative therapeutic approaches
- For those with prior experience seeking expansive, visionary work

Haole
StrongestVery High Potency · Luminous · Visionary
Origin
Haole, meaning 'foreigner' or 'white' in Hawaiian, is believed to be an albino isolation of PES Hawaiian (Pacifica Exotica Spora Hawaiian), a lineage prized for fast colonization and high potency. Its precise originator is unknown, but its Hawaiian lineage is traceable through its growth characteristics and fruiting morphology. The albino expression was stabilized through selective cultivation; like most true albino cubensis varieties, the trait is recessive and was isolated through careful lab work. Haole produces dense, stout fruiting bodies, typically smaller on the first flush, with markedly larger and more potent fruits emerging on the second through fourth flushes. At ~21 mg/g total alkaloid content, it sits among the most potent cultivated cubensis expressions documented. Its gold medal at the 2023 Denver Psychedelic Cup formally recognized what cultivators had long observed.
Characteristics Often Encountered
- True albino, ghostly white fruiting bodies with near-white spores
- Very high potency, ~21 mg/g total alkaloids, among the highest documented
- Gold medal, highest alkaloid content, Denver Psychedelic Cup 2023
- Dense, stout fruiting bodies; larger and more potent on 2nd–4th flush
- Luminous, expansive visionary experience with significant depth
- Fast colonization speed, vigorous and resilient in cultivation
- Reserved exclusively for experienced individuals in well-prepared therapeutic containers

MARS
StrongHigh Potency · Warm · Visionary
Origin
MARS does not carry the deep shamanic or indigenous lineage of traditionally sourced strains. It emerged within the underground mycological community as cultivators began hybridizing varieties for specific aesthetic and psychoactive traits. Its reddish-golden coloration and space-themed naming place it within a wave of modern cultivars, alongside strains like Jedi Mind Fuck and Neptune, developed and popularized in contemporary Western psychedelic culture. MARS is believed to descend from a cross between Redboy, known for vibrant gill pigmentation and photogenic fruiting bodies, and Cambodian Gold, itself derived from a strain collected near the temples of Angkor Wat, prized for its energetic character and warm visual quality. MARS has also produced a notable albino variant: Phobos, isolated by MycoCat Genetix and named for one of Mars's two moons.
Characteristics Often Encountered
- Reddish-golden caps, broad, convex to umbonate, flattening with age
- Thick, sturdy stipes with dense, rhizomorphic mycelium
- Medium to large fruiting bodies with strong fruiting characteristics
- High potency, elevated psilocybin and psilocin profile
- Warm, energetic visual quality with a grounding undertone
- Energizing and uplifting onset with strong introspective depth
- Best suited to experienced individuals in well-prepared containers

Purple Mystic
Moderate–StrongAbove Average Potency · Visionary · Creative
Origin
Purple Mystic originates from Plant City, Florida, where it was wild-collected along the Gulf Coast and subsequently stabilized by local growers. Its most visually defining trait, exceptionally deep purple-brown spore prints, inspired its name and set it apart within the cubensis world. It carries no indigenous ceremonial lineage, but has developed a devoted following for its consistent, emotionally open, and creatively expansive character. Purple Mystic has also contributed to hybridization work: American Mystic, a cross of PE6 and Purple Mystic, draws on its emotionally expansive quality to complement PE6's introspective depth. A related Florida-origin strain, Leucistic Treasure Coast, shares the Gulf Coast provenance.
Characteristics Often Encountered
- Deep purple-brown spore prints, among the most vivid of any cubensis cultivar
- Medium-sized fruiting bodies with smooth golden to amber caps and firm stems
- Above-average potency, elevated psilocybin and psilocin content
- Emotionally vibrant, visually rich, and creatively expansive experience
- Strong association with clarity, healing, and subtle spiritual insight
- Accessible range, well-suited to both carefully prepared first journeys and experienced work

Albino Shiva Lingham
StrongestExtreme Potency · Introspective · Transcendent
Origin
The lineage begins in the Amazon with Terence McKenna, whose Amazonian spore collection in the 1970s became the genetic source for Penis Envy, itself purified and stabilized by mycologist Richard Gutierrez (Rich Gee), who observed a spontaneous mutant fruiting body of exceptional density and cloned it into what became PE. John Workman, a self-taught mycologist in the Pacific Northwest, then crossed a monokaryotic PF Albino culture with dry Penis Envy spores in the early 2000s, by his own account, purely for the beauty of the pale fruit, not for potency. The result, stabilized by Workman and later refined by underground cultivators including Ralphsters Spores, is what the community calls Albino Penis Envy (APE). Laboratory testing through the Hyphae Labs Psilocybin Cup in 2022 confirmed what anecdotal reports had long claimed: APE ranks at or near the top in total tryptamine content among all Psilocybe cubensis varieties, a result replicated at the Colorado Psychedelic Cup. Its compact morphology, dense, water-poor fruiting bodies, concentrates alkaloids more efficiently than larger, more hydrated strains.
"Please don't call me Penis Envy. My name is Shiva Lingham."
The medicine, to our friend and grower Travis Fluck
Characteristics Often Encountered
- Extreme potency, 1.8%–2.6% psilocybin/psilocin; up to 2–3× stronger than average cubensis
- Top-ranked at Hyphae Labs Psilocybin Cup 2022 and Colorado Psychedelic Cup
- Pale bluish-white leucistic coloration, near-pigment-free, not a true albino
- Thick, dense, meaty stems with small bulbous caps that often remain partially closed
- Near-sporeless, propagated primarily via agar culture, not spore prints
- Strong blue bruising on contact, visible marker of high alkaloid density
- Deep introspective and transcendent character, exclusively for experienced, well-prepared individuals
